We have just finished our unit on procedure writing and our 'Pizza Procedure Writing' task was definitely a highlight! I asked the students to create their own recipe procedure text on how to create their perfect pizza! As an extra incentive I told the students we would also be making pizza's, following the procedure of the 5 best pizza procedure texts that the students created. This would be based on practicality, accuracy, effort, and presentation.<br />

I remember as a child looking into my big sisters neat and totally organised room, with all her dolls lined up perfectly and wishing she would let me play in it! Meanwhile my room had <strike>looked like a tornado hit it</strike> a bit more character. This has carried on into my adult life. However that all changes when it comes to my classroom! For some reason I cannot have a messy classroom, whether is be dust, cluttered shelves or even lop-sided pillows, I can't stand it! I live an hour away from school so the LAST thing I want to do every afternoon is spend half an hour cleaning my room. So I created my pack up routine which I must admit has been my life saver!!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQAGb2UrfqSKPiK9u9WQWHqy0xo9gvQNXMm2AXlGX6BUMZO6sGHEq-nThJ3Ijy-fj4c-szzffNjqmYzWMBi9oZFtzC15WQ8mcQ5CBOp9iqztYWf9Qarw7RJvLPJkAHD_MRDkc8L_bs920/s1600/IMG_9537.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQAGb2UrfqSKPiK9u9WQWHqy0xo9gvQNXMm2AXlGX6BUMZO6sGHEq-nThJ3Ijy-fj4c-szzffNjqmYzWMBi9oZFtzC15WQ8mcQ5CBOp9iqztYWf9Qarw7RJvLPJkAHD_MRDkc8L_bs920/s400/IMG_9537.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKqJDgFEc-1nlYPxNKOwsfa67DIMSDtNCvA6_YrbNLs5Z5fXkXm8m-nRMdk8M7Rb0fLRhZxhEwwtxAOxfa_R4_ZvrCRQqXyh56fazJLI1u17262YMPT7bZ3eJ5W8ybZkQYw93lonLlzdc/s1600/IMG_9539.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKqJDgFEc-1nlYPxNKOwsfa67DIMSDtNCvA6_YrbNLs5Z5fXkXm8m-nRMdk8M7Rb0fLRhZxhEwwtxAOxfa_R4_ZvrCRQqXyh56fazJLI1u17262YMPT7bZ3eJ5W8ybZkQYw93lonLlzdc/s400/IMG_9539.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I thought about all the area's of the classroom that needed to be attended to each afternoon and made this chart! I printed the students names onto chalk sticks and then attached them to a peg. Each week I move the pegs over one place so the students have 1-2 weeks on their assigned jobs. The jobs I've included on my chart are: Bins, Sweeper, Pencil Pots, Library, Teacher Library (I have a separate library with books I have bought), Desk Cleaner, Board Cleaner, Cushions and mats, Maths Shelves, Messenger, Reader Packs, Inspector and Rubbish (out in the yard). I think most jobs speak for themselves. One of the best things I did was add the 'Inspector' job. It's basically the Inspectors job to make sure that everyone is on task and doing their assigned job. They then give a report at the end when all the jobs have been completed. This had made a big difference to how well our pack up time has run!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Not only has this pack up routine saved me soo much time the kids really love it! I'd definitely recommend teachers to give it a go!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Want to learn more about my pack up routine? Leave me a comment and let me know!</div>

Yikes! For those who don't know, the NAPLAN (National Assessment Program- Literacy and Numeracy) is a national standardised test that all students in year 3, 5, 7 and 9 take annually. This test is conducted under exam conditions. Because my <strike>babies</strike> students are in year 3, they will be taking the NAPLAN test for the first time. I've been trying, to the best of my ability, to prepare them as much as possible, and in doing so COMPLETELY forgot about Mother's Day. I basically raided my arts cupboard today to come up with a quick but effective card craft my kids could complete in an afternoon. Fortunately, luck was on my side!<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here are the things you will need for this craft taskā¦ When it comes to craft material I <strike>am a hoarder</strike> make sure I don't throw anything that may come in handy!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjG7B1YUEKLDENtZMDOcTuvktP7_-lheakSELQrp41YiRCpX5ZwKGzYFc1BnE-8EJxhmGwpNGYaufkkm3JInj5eMXVX5yAHazmx4RKdVrl72ZOmXvFdiXXMexmfHsRVXhmgg0CVNdDcWFg/s1600/IMG_9798.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjG7B1YUEKLDENtZMDOcTuvktP7_-lheakSELQrp41YiRCpX5ZwKGzYFc1BnE-8EJxhmGwpNGYaufkkm3JInj5eMXVX5yAHazmx4RKdVrl72ZOmXvFdiXXMexmfHsRVXhmgg0CVNdDcWFg/s400/IMG_9798.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The first thing I got the students to do was fold their paper doily to create the base of the bouquet.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKUrSLjxmk_-IvdB9L1rWSMlgwej9e-Up6gWpNANWKwSsrtR2IEPAKJd7I5vJxjAh9cVJCb3kMRB6euZOSjMOVyRzAfVaKItTxk6j-Ncaurr0kPAfCgmL9dVzwS5vtbdW66_8PnJ9mlF0/s1600/IMG_9800.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="376" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKUrSLjxmk_-IvdB9L1rWSMlgwej9e-Up6gWpNANWKwSsrtR2IEPAKJd7I5vJxjAh9cVJCb3kMRB6euZOSjMOVyRzAfVaKItTxk6j-Ncaurr0kPAfCgmL9dVzwS5vtbdW66_8PnJ9mlF0/s400/IMG_9800.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then students cut strips of green paper and slid them inside their doily pocket for the flower stems.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBYZm0VVAOA7Yzt-tgWXrjoetQy5OMNOKikV6lZ3M2P2x5bne2O44VMaB6zGrzmlgqjaiceqsmLl96k5VVv-fq0UcuuR_twAAuuuVYEYmTgNT_CSENZCgm-zIOZYjPR9eG0X8GNfE6MFA/s1600/IMG_9802.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="367" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBYZm0VVAOA7Yzt-tgWXrjoetQy5OMNOKikV6lZ3M2P2x5bne2O44VMaB6zGrzmlgqjaiceqsmLl96k5VVv-fq0UcuuR_twAAuuuVYEYmTgNT_CSENZCgm-zIOZYjPR9eG0X8GNfE6MFA/s400/IMG_9802.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Flowers can be so tricky! But I loved using this no fuss method to create them. The students traced around the top of a plastic cup for a large circle, and then the bottom of the cup for a smaller circle</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzCs8XnY2heDx42Dj7DxnojJl-hcbNaVXjsTQsAjzweKT8iOIzMkroauLvzpgpMLTgRvqLl8w4pD7QycKkRpOP-aRANnXkmc6blfzx7DEDquXarv2snNRlrNv7CYbxX0bttRBG91pTtMA/s1600/Screen+Shot+2015-05-07+at+8.58.49+PM.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="358" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzCs8XnY2heDx42Dj7DxnojJl-hcbNaVXjsTQsAjzweKT8iOIzMkroauLvzpgpMLTgRvqLl8w4pD7QycKkRpOP-aRANnXkmc6blfzx7DEDquXarv2snNRlrNv7CYbxX0bttRBG91pTtMA/s640/Screen+Shot+2015-05-07+at+8.58.49+PM.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We then put the smaller circle inside the bigger circle, and then added a button in the middle to create our flowers.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi26PglzoVTLchtx1hZhoTWNVEyFZJPZgvK3VeL_aq0A_F8UwJ5n7Xj1UA3indEQ4DOfhx4a49YEJPwlBHmV8Kj-L-40-HAQPZKtc37Wciqb5_UtKbcn5OYA1cmgV5Z__NjrpaQBsBc9AE/s1600/IMG_9819.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="356" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi26PglzoVTLchtx1hZhoTWNVEyFZJPZgvK3VeL_aq0A_F8UwJ5n7Xj1UA3indEQ4DOfhx4a49YEJPwlBHmV8Kj-L-40-HAQPZKtc37Wciqb5_UtKbcn5OYA1cmgV5Z__NjrpaQBsBc9AE/s640/IMG_9819.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We added a a lovely gold bow and voila! I just love how these worked out! Might have to make one for my mum too!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

They are so adorable! Each of them has their own unique (and very different) personality. Whether we're making taco's, having pretend ninja fights or watching a movie these boys are a constant joy. With them around, my Saturdays are always entertaining!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBPQLuZp_cqpBgOgvByfs8sg_a37ciUeSHzWCqXOmXVzVlUOotUSthS7U2_QGbZn7q1-A9TSqN1HFu_T_KnDsYscuyhNrUlD2mNs1YS3nYtf376i9HahlO_e_yhgj9_y0gEIU66DY8mek/s1600/IMG_9162.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBPQLuZp_cqpBgOgvByfs8sg_a37ciUeSHzWCqXOmXVzVlUOotUSthS7U2_QGbZn7q1-A9TSqN1HFu_T_KnDsYscuyhNrUlD2mNs1YS3nYtf376i9HahlO_e_yhgj9_y0gEIU66DY8mek/s1600/IMG_9162.jpg" height="312" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
One of my favourite things to do with the boys is painting! This week I only had black and white paint (note to self: always order well ahead of time!) so I used trusty Pinterest to see what sort of art activity I could scrounge up. There really is some great black and white paintings out there, but none that were really kid friendly. Then I came across this pin from <a href="http://cmae-adayinthelife.blogspot.com.br/2011/11/art-overload-friday.html" target="_blank">A Little Lovely</a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I love the effect the card-paint combo makes, it looks so pretty. This inspired me to create a birch tree art project with the kiddies!</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
Teaching colour mixing is always fun and exciting! I love this colour mixing activity, and it's always a hit with my students. <span style="text-align: center;">You will need: diluted blue, red and yellow food colouring, matchsticks newspaper, pipettes and a the colour mixing chart template which you will find <a href="http://mamajenn.com/blog/2011/09/color-wheel-printable-now-on.html" target="_blank">here</a>. </span></div>

Even though I have a straight year 3 class, I still have a very wide range of learning abilities! This activity helped me with that- same game, 3 variations to ensure all students are being challenged at a level suitable to them. I created this game for students to review their 'Rainbow Facts'. Rainbow facts are numbers that make 10, such as 9+1 or 7+3. Developing automaticity with addition facts is so important! If a students is able to instantly recall 7+3=10, they begin to develop efficient strategies for addition of other addition facts, such as the answer to 7+4 will be 1 more than 10.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

There were 3 Islands to choose from; Make 5, make 10 or make 20 (obviously for those who were already fluent with their make 10 facts!). The students studied their 'Number Island' activity sheet and searched for groups of numbers that totalled the number they were looking for. They then circled these numbers.<br />
<br />

I also encouraged students to use unifix blocks to represent their addition sums, as well as to ensure their grouped numbers totalled the number they were searching for!<br />

My students each have a pencil peg with their name on it. All pegs start on 'Pre-write' and then as they progress with their writing, they move their peg onto the next stage until they have reached the tip of the pencil which is the 'Finished' section. I LOVE using this for my writing tasks. Each section of the pencil has a different writing stage; Pre-write, Draft, Edit, Good Copy, Illustration and Finished.<br />

<b>Pre-Write</b><br />
All the student's pencil pegs start on the 'Pre-Write' section. During this phase students brainstorm what they want to write about. They may also have a chat to the person next to them for some ideas and inspiration. This is also the time to write the title and date on their work.<br />
<br />
<b><br /></b>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjb-ip3r0yEoZHmBcRHe1JkZKeHWefuvdRQX9ZoGjC7eKblNVM594rRkbMwebwP9oY-F0bZc8vBynC-432xz7J4CENTysg9lU5okNekXruANYYlonVHJMO11zkUD-T2MUx63F5nOk5inBI/s1600/IMG_9585.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjb-ip3r0yEoZHmBcRHe1JkZKeHWefuvdRQX9ZoGjC7eKblNVM594rRkbMwebwP9oY-F0bZc8vBynC-432xz7J4CENTysg9lU5okNekXruANYYlonVHJMO11zkUD-T2MUx63F5nOk5inBI/s1600/IMG_9585.jpg" height="167" width="200" /></a></div>
<b>Draft</b><br />
Once students have completed the pre-write phase they move their pencil peg onto the 'Draft' section. This is when students begin their actual writing. Once they have finished their draft they need to re-read it to make sure it makes sense, then they can move their pencil peg up to the 'Edit' section.<br />

During the 'Edit' phase, students come to me so I can check their spelling and grammar. I underline words that they have spelt incorrectly and ask them to either try and spell the word again, or check their dictionaries for the correct spelling. I also give them feedback on their work. The only time I will check students work is when they are right next to me. I've realised there's no point in checking and correcting work when the writer is not there- how often will my year 3's actually flick through previous writing work to see what errors had been corrected?!<br />

After students have corrected all their errors, students move onto writing their good copy. I only use this section if I'm planning to put their writing on display, like my <b><a href="http://www.livingbreathingandlovingteaching.blogspot.com.au/2015/04/earth-day-project.html" target="_blank">Earth Day writing</a> </b>task or my creative writing <b><a href="http://www.livingbreathingandlovingteaching.blogspot.com.au/2015/03/creative-writing-if-i-won-million.html" target="_blank">If I had a million dollars</a> </b>task. If they are just doing writing in their writing books, they skip this phase and move onto the illustration section<br />
<br />

<br />
I always get my students to draw a picture when they have finished their writing. It doesn't have to be a big fancy picture (although some students prefer it to be that way!) just something small and neat so that they can really value their work! Presentation is important!<br />

This part speaks for itself- the student has finished their writing task!<br />
<br />
I've found this pencil gives students accountability and really motivates them to stay on task- everyone wants their peg on the 'Finished' section by the end of the lesson! It also gives me an indication of where each student is at with their work. If a student has remained on the 'Pre-Write' section for a while, I'll ask if they need some assistance with their work. If I feel like someone is flying through the stages, I'll make sure they are on the right track<br />
and their work is NEAT.<br />
<br />
Keep smiling!<br />

This activity really proved that to me. I call this the 'Random Line Drawing' activity because your whole picture is based on just that- a random line! First I put a clean sheet of paper on the white board for the whole class to see. Using a black marker, I drew a random line. I then asked my students how they can turn this randomly drawn line into a work of art. If someone came up with a suggestion that I felt was creative enough, they would receive that sheet of paper and could start their art work. Then I would draw another random line and repeat this process until every student had a sheet of paper. I think this is a really good strategy, as the students who were still a but unsure got to hear all the suggestion from the other students, and I think this got their creative juices flowing! Some lines were curly, some were straight, some had sharp edges and some had soft edges. No two lines were the same! I was um-ing and ah-ing about doing this for quite sometime because I really did underestimate just how creative my students could be, but I'm glad I did it, they look fantastic and the students were super proud of their work!<br />

I always teach near doubles when I have finished my unit on doubles as it builds on students proficiency with doubles facts. Near doubles facts and doubles +1 or -1. For example, when solving a near doubles fact like 6+7, students can think double 6 plus 1 more. I use Ann Baker's Mental Computation Strategies which I LOVE! The improvement in fact fluency since I have started using her strategies is amazing! For those who haven't heard of her, you can check out her website <a href="http://naturalmaths.com.au/" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
To introduce the topic we made our own near doubles neighbours! I gave each student a template of 3 houses side by side, and a doubles fact. The great thing about this lesson is you can be strategic about what double fact you give to which child. For example, I gave all the students who needed extending a double digit doubles fact. They wrote their doubles fact in the middle, and then on each side house they wrote the near doubles fact relating to the doubles fact.</div>
<div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAy64YO0TuRhsK5jrreOUJGk3yF8aGKL2O8nLDrt5QwRKz0merARrSPb733E-wnA2f7324fKcjoS3zv0yPn7NOBoRK52B7ikrS2arQGbvbddIKqSLU_syiZuVVeJx9hSz78Dd0mdHVv7Y/s1600/IMG_9401.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAy64YO0TuRhsK5jrreOUJGk3yF8aGKL2O8nLDrt5QwRKz0merARrSPb733E-wnA2f7324fKcjoS3zv0yPn7NOBoRK52B7ikrS2arQGbvbddIKqSLU_syiZuVVeJx9hSz78Dd0mdHVv7Y/s1600/IMG_9401.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
After they had finished, they coloured their houses in and ta-da! A beautiful near doubles display! I think this is a great visual way for students to understand how near doubles work, and how efficient is it to use this strategy!</div>

First we discussed how we could make the world a more harmonious place, for both the environment and humanity. I gave the students the story starter 'I can make the world a better place byā¦" and away they went! I was super impressed with all the amazing ideas they came up with :)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZsZqiv0GqDh5KWXg78HQPnIb3UU4WiuvQhUixdZJATR7iREg-PiVplD3qGgTHgYBZlrS9mrCma4a0ZPf8PjmniVPkNO5KAQRhWLV73ugADaa8vVDy5SXO0LSkqYJp4ZfTjRAxNWjvFq0/s1600/IMG_9349.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZsZqiv0GqDh5KWXg78HQPnIb3UU4WiuvQhUixdZJATR7iREg-PiVplD3qGgTHgYBZlrS9mrCma4a0ZPf8PjmniVPkNO5KAQRhWLV73ugADaa8vVDy5SXO0LSkqYJp4ZfTjRAxNWjvFq0/s1600/IMG_9349.jpg" height="208" width="320" /></a></div>
After students had finished their good copies, they moved onto their art activity. I love incorporating art in my writing lessons, it's a great way for students to be intrinsically motivated in the task! For this activity I used a shaving cream marbling technique to create Earths. Here's how to do it:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEih9xbYnxg6aUar88jvD2YTrLjwmudSuUNcgzMBPbC_6Og-w-F0zvO20Ea9S407n8vZ8lzoCvjor3lJv6aePcAQqB_JXyDs4XGLKpyNIO2Xof5YBD3O4FcyULz-rrTTFqky21DnchpU_9c/s1600/Screen+Shot+2015-04-12+at+3.50.40+PM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEih9xbYnxg6aUar88jvD2YTrLjwmudSuUNcgzMBPbC_6Og-w-F0zvO20Ea9S407n8vZ8lzoCvjor3lJv6aePcAQqB_JXyDs4XGLKpyNIO2Xof5YBD3O4FcyULz-rrTTFqky21DnchpU_9c/s1600/Screen+Shot+2015-04-12+at+3.50.40+PM.png" height="163" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Trace a circle onto white cardstock and then cut it out.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9X91fmppVbpuYB1jCAxHXQKoZobXA3TyD9rPy99poVBf5W8q0zBoXdOWRcXHrrbX978s1eMvelm0WzLDXLS8uSGgjHgy_8IWmA_wUUcCdgDq6DO_36-W0NTDwkhjNkf9UpYDVOPgclyw/s1600/IMG_9483.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9X91fmppVbpuYB1jCAxHXQKoZobXA3TyD9rPy99poVBf5W8q0zBoXdOWRcXHrrbX978s1eMvelm0WzLDXLS8uSGgjHgy_8IWmA_wUUcCdgDq6DO_36-W0NTDwkhjNkf9UpYDVOPgclyw/s1600/IMG_9483.jpg" height="175" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Squirt about a handful of shaving cream on a piece of newspaper and spread it out until there is a thick layer covering a large area of the newspaper.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLQTUzUtdEICJtGevUepolmcBX9ND6DQ4M6V_fPle033uyMUHB9ad5NnXG-1ob3TRigFkF_D0OVrnhV341T7DBjT42hYijKQfeLZIkg1ij1av62lNJC9CSMd0zVWKigWErw1jUjMnriQo/s1600/Screen+Shot+2015-04-12+at+4.06.45+PM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLQTUzUtdEICJtGevUepolmcBX9ND6DQ4M6V_fPle033uyMUHB9ad5NnXG-1ob3TRigFkF_D0OVrnhV341T7DBjT42hYijKQfeLZIkg1ij1av62lNJC9CSMd0zVWKigWErw1jUjMnriQo/s1600/Screen+Shot+2015-04-12+at+4.06.45+PM.png" height="182" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Squirt blue and green paint over the shaving cream, and then use the end of a thin paint brush to swirl the paint around. Make sure you don't over swirl! </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Press the paper circle firmly into the shaving cream and leave for about 30 seconds to 1 minute.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Very carefully, lift the paper circle and place it on some newspaper for about 5-10 minutes. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The students did such a brilliant job and were engaged the whole time, which is always a win! I think they look absolutely brilliant!!<br />

Each week, my students complete a spelling contract for homework which involves putting their spelling words into sentences, rainbow words etc in their homework books, so there really isn't any point in repeating this process at school. Therefore, I've decided all my Word Work stations at school should be hands-on. I haven't decided on all my stations yet, but here are a few I've selected:<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Whiteboard Words</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgizjB_SGAK-bu0MKr0SUUnQHruQjw64rhl9R1La_jalDFELkqtPUy5RBGK3WGsPt33mOZ2ZH5FLyIeDm33wO9VBiYbdzdjLJ40xJ13gC_UO1THfBndnKey1MhgpZZsuuisDqnzycv8WjA/s1600/IMG_9254.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgizjB_SGAK-bu0MKr0SUUnQHruQjw64rhl9R1La_jalDFELkqtPUy5RBGK3WGsPt33mOZ2ZH5FLyIeDm33wO9VBiYbdzdjLJ40xJ13gC_UO1THfBndnKey1MhgpZZsuuisDqnzycv8WjA/s1600/IMG_9254.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
For spelling words, I give students 8 words
based on a spelling pattern or sound such as āouā words, or ātionā words. Students
use two different coloured whiteboard markers and write their words, ensuring
that the common spelling pattern is highlighted in a different colour in each
word. For example, in the picture above, you can see the āthā is written in
purple and all other letters are in orange.<br />

I purchased a whole heap of these magic doodle boards from k-mart 2 years ago and absolutely love them! Students love writing on these, so I thought it would be perfect to incorporate them into my Word Work stations!<br />

These wooden scrap book letters are great for allowing students to connect uppercase letters with lowercase letters. The individual compartments for each letter makes it easier for students to find the sound they are after quickly.</div>

The prospect of 20+ children with paint trays can seem quite daunting, but I think if you have clear expectations and structure, your lessons will run very smoothly. One of the most important things is to make sure you have EVERYTHING set out and ready before your lesson begins- the last thing you want to do is to be juggling mixing paint, finding paint brushes, tying students aprons etc along with making sure students are on the right track with their art work.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This week we did a 'Moonlit Starry Night Sky' painting. I got the idea <a href="https://www.pinterest.com/pin/153122456054618844/" target="_blank">here</a> on pinterest (for those who have not invested in a Pinterest account yet- do it! It's a must have for all teachers) and couldn't resist trying it out with my kiddo's!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I have a period at the start of every art lesson which I call 'Instruction Time'. During this time, we talk about the different art techniques behind the painting we are about to do and I do a demonstration. For this activity we discussed colour shades. I showed students how we can add white to a colour to make it lighter, and the more white we add, the lighter the shade becomes.<br />

We started by painting a white dot in the middle of our page. Then we used the second lightest shade and painted a circle around the white dot.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-XVzw8zD8LwC_8ETMsuyKV8QSQ1W-jKXTrJ9E4od_DOLrma19m0tiptCqigwkkmmGus6bbJY002AfqBZbg25GkOE6M0bhFCcitWdY0MEmjkz52QodyE14KHDaTTzXuGRvRJB4-2u-e-I/s1600/IMG_9128.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-XVzw8zD8LwC_8ETMsuyKV8QSQ1W-jKXTrJ9E4od_DOLrma19m0tiptCqigwkkmmGus6bbJY002AfqBZbg25GkOE6M0bhFCcitWdY0MEmjkz52QodyE14KHDaTTzXuGRvRJB4-2u-e-I/s1600/IMG_9128.JPG" height="142" width="320" /></a></div>
We continued doing this until we had used all the shades of our colour, then we painted the rest of our page in the darkest shade.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7gNBb1l15cjAo0-8SGP1Z1x-4c-Z8-xnMgDzypjQzf6fp7_jIYXv5DvyuFZQu-OVeYaMacIUh1bgDQZB9JdY7kk5qO-YvVVhdFzYSyqMtuhcb9Y2Kn99uELS6UFAgYUbVT_Thyphenhyphen3T-ebQ/s1600/IMG_9130.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7gNBb1l15cjAo0-8SGP1Z1x-4c-Z8-xnMgDzypjQzf6fp7_jIYXv5DvyuFZQu-OVeYaMacIUh1bgDQZB9JdY7kk5qO-YvVVhdFzYSyqMtuhcb9Y2Kn99uELS6UFAgYUbVT_Thyphenhyphen3T-ebQ/s1600/IMG_9130.jpg" height="246" width="320" /></a></div>
The beauty of this lesson is that the students don't have to watch their paint brushes as they change shades! I love lessons like this as it can get pretty messy when you need to constantly wash your paint brush a million times a lesson!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFh5ix1s1b0znD1YezAEZt-9_ScFzupVBYR0DoiM9HP-yYzL__9NB-U8cUfRqIn9MtSsKQfwVnh6KtewtsWdbZ44UuwdOc-mRqd4X3pnd4dGVABb6B0XmHLKV5BN5L4t0kh8UNirGJKKQ/s1600/IMG_9139.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFh5ix1s1b0znD1YezAEZt-9_ScFzupVBYR0DoiM9HP-yYzL__9NB-U8cUfRqIn9MtSsKQfwVnh6KtewtsWdbZ44UuwdOc-mRqd4X3pnd4dGVABb6B0XmHLKV5BN5L4t0kh8UNirGJKKQ/s1600/IMG_9139.jpg" height="241" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
We used a flicking technique to create little stars in our sky. I added some water to my white paint and got the kids to flick the paint on their paint brushes onto their page. Make sure that you do this OUTSIDE as it can get quite messy! But the kids had an absolute ball doing it :)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_2XySQd6Tj5tIEHjsygImzw0IRo5WcYtvGz5wItBuTPzrJlmseG1YLmrt3n5Oa9vGOx28WDdXze8d-aQQuwrSxEfFF7r1mo72CI8ploIK5S3cec0ccbThPvBqsURvXUshsMkvtMo232Y/s1600/IMG_9318.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_2XySQd6Tj5tIEHjsygImzw0IRo5WcYtvGz5wItBuTPzrJlmseG1YLmrt3n5Oa9vGOx28WDdXze8d-aQQuwrSxEfFF7r1mo72CI8ploIK5S3cec0ccbThPvBqsURvXUshsMkvtMo232Y/s1600/IMG_9318.jpg" height="286" width="320" /></a></div>
The final step was the trees. I cut up different lengths of cardboard and got the kids to dip the edges in black paint to create our trees. I made sure I told the children that the base of the tree must come off the page- there are no such thing as floating trees!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div>
I must admire, I love walking into my class and seeing this display :)<br />

Inspired by St Patricks Day, this week I incorporated our 'If I won a million dollars' creative writing with a 'Pot of Gold' art activity!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiHDAGuHZKiAi45KuBNJAaGELtPON2RwcLpCxcSVYFawT-pDuRELDDa_fPHbdHgt53W03tNa9_Zdbm8MuvV0RMpvUm1wmrQunFJ7XxWz25vyCkbCW_m-X7k_VotMduVjtRp_0Q2kXKqr4/s1600/IMG_9201.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiHDAGuHZKiAi45KuBNJAaGELtPON2RwcLpCxcSVYFawT-pDuRELDDa_fPHbdHgt53W03tNa9_Zdbm8MuvV0RMpvUm1wmrQunFJ7XxWz25vyCkbCW_m-X7k_VotMduVjtRp_0Q2kXKqr4/s1600/IMG_9201.JPG" height="236" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The children first completed their good copy and illustrations. <span style="text-align: center;">For the pots of gold you need thick cardboard so guess who stayed back one Friday afternoon wrestling a stanley knife through chunks of cardboard to create 19 pot templates? ME! The end result was totally worth it though :)</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: center;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuEzcCS8yxuys2zySZNrtJq6rkEqi9N-bM6Qh2m4dWBXNnjSE9_g6WoxnrtowgurZRmUH8zV1sabZpvp2mQWkHF5UMg5YRt9F3-s2zUSBI8OrW-z6Lhc8Q0TpW7THwRMivS-pWCZ7XI7Q/s1600/IMG_9195.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuEzcCS8yxuys2zySZNrtJq6rkEqi9N-bM6Qh2m4dWBXNnjSE9_g6WoxnrtowgurZRmUH8zV1sabZpvp2mQWkHF5UMg5YRt9F3-s2zUSBI8OrW-z6Lhc8Q0TpW7THwRMivS-pWCZ7XI7Q/s1600/IMG_9195.jpg" height="214" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Using PVA glue, we glued pasta shells, lima beans and rice on the top of our pot. I made sure I got students to fill the entire section and to full in any blank spots with rice.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDOCXYtI1Z_mnOYy4kmIR-UUcBhYoHpK-_8G9_BAZPoRGD6nerC5c5DxsJ5vu8A9_QLEG_kELnj7W_0lgVmvkUaxURRlEdta3x3XkxfBR5IZph527B7KITUUjNxHs6-KQGdzH42jW4oqI/s1600/IMG_9206.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDOCXYtI1Z_mnOYy4kmIR-UUcBhYoHpK-_8G9_BAZPoRGD6nerC5c5DxsJ5vu8A9_QLEG_kELnj7W_0lgVmvkUaxURRlEdta3x3XkxfBR5IZph527B7KITUUjNxHs6-KQGdzH42jW4oqI/s1600/IMG_9206.JPG" height="320" width="303" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When the top had dried, I used gold spray paint to cover the entire area and give the illusion of gold. I then got the children to paint their pots grey.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTxNbb7160MbM0Mnfh7VhJghoH8EA-5WKrjVN6RyH0i_h51J81Q8QnX8ONGdSoKdeBp02JHz4LB7AXSb5rYCLg-DbLZ4Vxn2EjyuswPr9GST-jGUAvuS5ACs4xmnGhwtBnzB-Q0VnUXBU/s1600/IMG_9290.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTxNbb7160MbM0Mnfh7VhJghoH8EA-5WKrjVN6RyH0i_h51J81Q8QnX8ONGdSoKdeBp02JHz4LB7AXSb5rYCLg-DbLZ4Vxn2EjyuswPr9GST-jGUAvuS5ACs4xmnGhwtBnzB-Q0VnUXBU/s1600/IMG_9290.jpg" height="235" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I gave the top one more spray of gold to create a 'glowing' effect at the top of the pot. The students then added a dollar sign and used some lighter grey paint to create the effect of light reflecting off the pot. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I laminated the students work, added a bit of gold glitter to the edges and TA DA!! A fantastic looking creative writing piece :)</div>

I've got Box to help me with that! Who is Box might you ask? He's my trusty creative writing box buddy! Creative name I know ;) Every second week we have a creative writing lesson, and I tell the students that Box is actually magical and will decide what the topic is about. His way of letting us know what he wants us to write about is by showing us some different objects which are supposed to be clues for our story starter. The difference in quality and engagement of writing when I use Box is amazing! Here's what Box had in store for us this week:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4lWqymGuIF5Zet0nnhrr64kBokP99WpomH-PKe1-_ERnWmKbz3jL0NCKSyUT8mG7NnoBuEQzj97kwW0DVL0_ZN2BWRc7b7Eg7sK4CtSSMc7uaGRwQcDRj4Kau_wo5GPLNxIrEhN1h6FM/s1600/IMG_9291.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4lWqymGuIF5Zet0nnhrr64kBokP99WpomH-PKe1-_ERnWmKbz3jL0NCKSyUT8mG7NnoBuEQzj97kwW0DVL0_ZN2BWRc7b7Eg7sK4CtSSMc7uaGRwQcDRj4Kau_wo5GPLNxIrEhN1h6FM/s1600/IMG_9291.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Inside of Box I had put a winning lottery ticket, a cheque for one million dollars and $500 dollars cash with the label 'Spending Money' attached to it. Using Box is also a great way to improve infrence making ability. I encouraged students to look at ALL the clues to find out what box wanted our story starter to be. It actually took a lot more guesses than I thought! Our task this week was 'If I won a million dollars'. Even though I'm pretty sure my students are aware that Box is really just a box, no one has breathed a word about the fact that it may be ME putting the items in the box! In fact, the students were absolutely delighted with the prospect that Box had potentially robbed a bank to provide us our clues! Too cute :)<br />
